Sorry to be so slow getting back to everyone; my modem’s been down for
awhile. First of all, thanks to everyone for your great input.
Vines: I really like moonflowers, but they have never been very vigorous
for me. I bought some seeds for a climbing nasturtium—canary creeper, and
some moonflower seeds. I’ll start both, and see which seems to grow more
quickly.
I hadn’t really thought about lilies, but they’d be good in pots in front of
the arbor. I’ll have to check and see what the local nurseries have
available, both in lilies and callas.
I got seeds for salvia ‘sizzler’ (alas, not coral nymph, but I’ll watch for
it in the nurseries), cosmos ‘bright lights’, bronze gazania, um…several
types of helianthus, lobelia, verbena ‘blue lagoon’ and ‘peaches and cream’,
coral and ivory zinnias… I figure I’ll pick out some that look particularly
good for containers. Good idea to use asparagus fern and ivy to fill.
I hadn’t really considered using hanging baskets, but I do have some “flower
pouches” that I might be able to use to help add color to the arbor.
Thanks for the information about storing peonies. I don’t have any, but I
must know someone who does! Karin, I’ll plan on keeping moose out of the
yard (not a problem around here) but I can’t swear we won’t have an
armadillo wreaking havoc! And I will have a little talk with the cat about
climbing on dresses.
Thanks to everyone who responded. I’m busily planting seeds (hard to do
with my fingers crossed!) I’ll let you know how I’m progressing.
