I am in zone 4, Minnesota. I would not call my wild flower garden "hard
clay" unless its really dry-then you cant get a shovel in the ground even if
you jump up in the air and land on it with both feet.
Our local soil is classified as "clay-muck" clay and organics mix-makes for a
pain. When wet it sticks to your feet, when dry-well you saw what I said
above.
It has good moisture holding capacity-for clay, but when it dries out-it
takes a lot of water to get it wet again.
