Only thing left that I can think of..... I have seen these for sale so often
as a
dried out rhizome with scraggly remains of dried root system. Received a few
myself from wholesalers... and returned them for credit.

They do not want to be dried out. They should have an active growing point
near the surface of a pot.
I would not buy to many of our native ferns bare root, unless freshly dug.
