I have the same problem with the "Flowering" Types- I just big them up and
plant them deeper, If I do not do this they stick far enough up to get the
crowns frozen off in the winter.
I have had some that were 6 inches of stem with a few roots at one end and a
nice bushy clump of leaves at the other.
