I have also lost the J. painted fern. I have since come to know that there
are numerous clones on the market, some more vigorous than others. Buy a
vigorous plant. The trick, if it is a trick, is to keep that plant watered
and mulched the first year until it is established. After a year, maybe
two, it can take care of itself.
Some clones remain quite short and fronds are nearly lateral. Others make
tall ferny clumps. All ferns that die here have not much root system when
discarded so a period of establishment seems to be necessary. An established
fern, say a Christmas fern, will have a root system needing an afternoon's
work to remove it. If you have tried to dig a mature fern, any native sort,
from your woods you will see what a long established fern can do in the way
of a root system.
