I have also tried to grow the Maidenhair fern outdoors for many years with no
luck. Five years ago I found a source nearby that had the fern growing in
the nursery and they took up a piece from their plant and sold to
me........(all the others I had purchased were in pots and grown/shipped from
who knows where). The fern was planted in a heavily shaded spot in my garden
at the base of a wax myrtle tree. I also have my J. Painted fern painted
nearby but not in as much shade. Both ferns are doing great and have spread
in size. The area is damp and cooler than most areas in my garden. I was
told when I purchased the Maidenhair that I must keep it cool.......as it
does not like Zone 8 heat and sun.
