No, I think they've all been 3 1/2-5" pots, some looking quite healthy. /:|
I'm trying to get a copy of the paper on peat beds that Doug Green
referenced by Jim McClement(?). It also could be that they need far more
water than I've supplied, esp in the 2-3rd year at my house. Still, if they
were easy....(I'd have to say the same for the Royal Fern. I know they like
an overabundance of water and they certainly don't get THAT here--so they
never survive either....:-(( )
Not to say that I'm Typhoid Mary with the ferns! But perhaps some are more
FAR more forgiving as time goes on than others.

Hello Diann,
OK...now you have my curiosity motor running. One question. The
Maidenhair
ferns you have planted and lost in the past. Any of them from a 5 pint pot,
multiple rhizomes and full root systems to spread out into the surrounding
soil?
Only thing left that I can think of..... I have seen these for sale so often
as a
dried out rhizome with scraggly remains of dried root system. Received a few
myself from wholesalers... and returned them for credit.
