Thanks, Marge. You are always up to date. It seemed to me that there was
always a lot of membership news, pages and pages of it, awards, bios and and
that sort of stuff. Most of the Journals now put that membership news in
separate more cheaply printed slip-ins and leave the Journals for
horticultural interest. Then, when I asked, they informed me that I would
have to pay around 35.00, is that correct?, to support their work which was
in an area I would never see. So - I decided I could put my reading dollars
elsewhere.
I was a "member" but you are really not a member if you are 400 miles away.
Yes, it is on a newstand once in a while here. If you say so - I will look
again. The last issue I remember had a long article about someone who was
active in the DC/VA area and I thought it a great waste of time for the rest
of the country. They same or soon after issue had a bulb article written by
a west coast expert. He is author of some very good monographs but his AHS
articles were California material and dated. The material was non-factual
and they printed it, unedited I am sure.
After all this discussion, I like (lowbrow perhaps) the BBC magazine the
best. A big fat and useful magazine which throws in seeds and gloves and the
like. I also like a British tabloid that is published weekly and truly wish
we had one that was similar here. Maybe Pacific Horticulture could send over
a team and we could have an Atlantic Horticulture.
Penelope Hobhouse is in town for a lecture tomorrow and I am going. In The
dead of winter one will do almost anything.
