Interesting. We don't typically have hornets here. I'll do more investigation. That sounds great.

I use a plain old Concord grape vine for a similar purpose
here in zone 5. I keep it trimmed nicely and turn it back on
itself regularly to create fullness. HOWEVER, those "Jewels"
of grapes you mentioned draw hornets by the ton - so I'd
worry about using it in a main entrance way, unless you trim
them off . . .
