Okay, I surrender. Looks like the grape, especially for a main path, is a bad idea. Thank you everyone for the wise input. It is what I count on you all for!!!
PS -- 60+ clematis already -- was looking for something a bit different. Adore all vines. Have a monkshood vine and the porcelain berry vine as well. Guess that's why my life is always in a tangle?

Hi Susan,if I recall right your in the west,Oregon?
If so I would say Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea' is a possibility. For a grape its moderate grower, sized.
I have one 3-4yrs now and its well behaved. However its very arid here and I do NOT water nor feed it often..Just enough to keep it happy but no more..
It is attractive in a rustic sort of way,the leaves are somewhat fuzzy lending to a less formal look,at least here in this climate.
Fruits set some what late & are plentiful (small and dryish since I dont water that much)and the yellow jackets discovered them for their last feed of the year but they were sluggish with cold temps giving me the opportunity to spray them.I detest them as they are so aggressive however I encourage the wasps (hour glass
shape)as they are gentle and so beneficial in the garden they're bordering on 'pets' as this point ..Having given them so much free range they are turning up in spots I dont want them i.e. my tool box, garden lanterns etc.etc.But at least they dont sting unless 'forced' to..
Hum,there must be a less labor(picking fruit or putting up with flys, wasps, etc) and less hassle vines(pruning back unwanted growth) that you might want after thinking it over..How bout a long blooming Clematis?:^)

I just thought that "jewels" of grapes hanging there in fall would be pretty cool. But it is NOT a big arbor. Thanks for your suggestions
