I've run trials with several different chelone species in both sun and
shade. Once established they perform best in moderate shade with adequate
moisture. The moisture level is the key to success.
You *can* grow them in sunny sand if you don't let them dry out too badly.
I did grow them on a sandy 6" deep soil once with no supplemental water to
see what would happen. They grew OK with the spring water flush (snowmelt)
but the bloom (already late in the fall) wasn't very good. Plant didn't
die but didn't thrive either for several years.
Sun would be fine if the soil is moisture retentive enough - I currently
have several species growing in sunny borders (sand loam soil) but they do
get irrigation along with the rest of the border and the soil is not
allowed to go bone dry.
They will also grow and flower in a deep shade but not if that shade is
dry. Again - moisture is the key to success.
Get out the hose and you'll be fine.
