Re: Mertensia and Dicentra?

Hello Barb,
Sounds like a good combination to me.... bluebells and everblooming
bleeding hearts. May I make another suggestion? Try the yellow blooming
Merrybells (Uvularia) with the Virginia bluebells.... blue and yellow is a
classic combination. Also the foliage of the merrybells will be there come
hard frost in fall. Same story with the Dicentras....
I have not tried the "King of Hearts" as yet in the garden. Waiting for
them to quit arguing over who has the "real" one. I am not interested in
getting stuck with 100 "fakes" no one wants. I have tried the D. exima species
and cultivars.... certainly can sing the praised of those. Bloom from April to
November here if you do not let them dry out.
Bluebells here are mature divisions at $7 each. Incidentally, you need to
get them very soon and get them into the ground... they are beginning to break
dormancy here.... do best waking up in their own bed. Bluebells are best from
fresh seed, may take two years to germinate, take 3 years to bloom the first
time. Divisions are best unless you are not interested in the time factor or
want hundreds of bluebells. I usually have some seed each spring.

  Subject: Mertensia and Dicentra?

I am full of questions this morning!
Thanks to all of you wonderful people/friends who have broadened my horizons
and planted lust in my heart, I have been shopping for Mertensia and an
ever-blooming Dicentra.
King of Hearts has been highly recommended but am wondering how it compares
with others being offered. So if any of you have any comments or experience to
share, I would love to hear from you. Including any recommendations where to
buy it from.

I have placed my order with Bluestone Perennials to take advantage of their
"buy 2, get 1 free offer." But I am disappointed they don't carry the
Mertensia (Virginia Bluebells). I have been searching the Net and am surprised
at the prices I'm seeing -- $10+ which isn't such a bad price but I want 3-5.
Do any of you have any suggestions as to where I can buy these more
economically? Or if seeds are available anywhere?

Thanks again for your help and Best Wishes to you all,
  Barbara
