I grow several different vitacella varieites. The one that blooms unequivocally the "longest" is Polish Spirit.
Venosa Violecea (sp -- sorry, I'm at work) is SO worth growing, though, as it is a bi-color.
These plants are nearly bullet-proof and grow anywhere, sun or shade. They often root where they touch the ground, too. My *only* comment that needs heeding is they are NOT small plants. They are more like 10-15' instead of your typical 8-10' clematis.

I've never grown viticella's and am eyeing the catalogs...
I know that people on this list have recommended Etoille Violette, Polish
Spirit, and Betty Corning in the past. A few questions:
1) can anyone compare Etoille Violette and Polish Spirit? They both look
similar in photos...
2) Has anyone tried Perle d'Azure ?
3) any recommendations / experiences in the white, pink, or red colors ?
I'm thinking of trying to grow them through some mature lilac shrubs...
