I think shade tolerant especially for clematis means it will grow and flower, just not as profusely as in the sun.

The difference between the 2 is a slight variation of color. I would
describe Polish Spirit as a dark blue-purple with a slight red bar. Etoile
Violet as a violet-purple without the bar. The difference in color is in
the eye of the beholder. Both are beautiful and vigorous.
As for the reds....I grow viticella 'Kermisina', a small flowered dark
velvety red that blooms in July-August here. It is on the same trellis as
large flowered pink Nelly Moser - which blooms first. Then Kermisina
blooms, then Nelly repeats. It has been a good combination giving several
months of flowers on the same wall. But my favorite mid summer red is a
jackmanii hybrid call 'Rouge Cardinale'. It has large deep velvety garnet
blooms. The color is so beautiful it makes my eyes water to look at it.
I have Perle d'Azur on a shady arbor, but have been disappointed in its
sparse bloom. The color is a lovely pearly blue. I am quite certain the
sparse bloom is due to the shade, not due to the nature of the cultivar. I
was told it is "shade tolerant" by the grower - well, I guess if shade
tolerant means it doesn't die in the shade.....

I've never grown viticella's and am eyeing the catalogs...
I know that people on this list have recommended Etoille Violette, Polish
Spirit, and Betty Corning in the past. A few questions:
1) can anyone compare Etoille Violette and Polish Spirit? They both look
similar in photos...
2) Has anyone tried Perle d'Azure ?
3) any recommendations / experiences in the white, pink, or red colors ?
I'm thinking of trying to grow them through some mature lilac shrubs...
