Thanks Linda, I will know when they open in the pots. The foliage is tightly
rolled appearing as the hollow tubular foliage of some water plants but on
examination is a true leaf. I had this daffodil in the rock garden for a
long time but did not know what it was. I found some packaging in the shed
(big plastic nursery pot full of tossed in tags for when you are too busy to
make labels) for Hawera so posted it last fall.

Outside it is late blooming for the daffodil season with the flowers
extremely long lasting, well into June. I never divided any because I
cannot get them out of the rocks without a big excavation project so I bought
some more. So far, I have got the foliage to stay low by starting them from
a trench along the foundation to the cellar and about one inch from some
lights. When any started bulbs look like they may be going to bud I put them
in the skylights for natural light.

So much easier to live in some place where you can have bulbs outdoors in
February. They are all the more prized here for forcing.

The variety advice is good. If Linda and Bill have grown some of recommended
cv's and find them best for the Eastern half of the country, I would go
along. Not everything in the catalogs is for us. I have seen a catalog
description featuring the faults. One usually finds the reasons not to grow
something after the purchase.

The species bulbicodium (hoop skirt) was discussed endlessly on the rocks
list one year. As I recall, it is an indoor bulb in the northern half of the
country or a very special care bulb if you want to try. Even the bulb
wizards had given up.
