daffodil classics

Theresa,

Now here I totally agree with Bill ! Brent & Becky's Bulb catalogue has
a nice selection at good prices but I'd suggest the following:

Instead of Avalanche, I'd substitute 'Sir Winston Churchill'. It's
listed as a division 4 double instead of a division 8 tazetta. It's
still a tazetta, just a double one (it's an RHS thing). Incredibly
fragrant and how I first made acquaintance with Bill. He was carrying
one stem of it across a room and I just had to know what that wonderful
smell was!

Instead of 'Tahiti', I'd use 'Acropolis'. 'Tahiti' is a pale yellow
/orange double but the stems can be very tall and do not always support
the bloom. One rain and they are face down in the mud. 'Acropolis' is a
white double with orange petaloids. The stems are much sturdier.

Instead of 'Jack Snipe', I'd go for 'Mite' which is listed in the
miniatures. It's large for a mini and all yellow but has incredible form
and has been a good increaser here. Or the previously mentioned
'Segovia'.

And for anyone who likes the form of 'Hawera' and would like something a
little larger and in white, you can not beat 'Ice Wings'.

All great daffodils, but not all will do well in the colder zones.
Avalanche
usually freezes out here in Cincinnati unless in a very protected spot
and
we're Zone 6a. Mine froze so many years in a row that it died. Hoops
petticoats (Narcissus bulbocodium) can be iffy--I've never found the
exactly
right conditions that make them live on for many years.

Intrigue and Quail are great jonquils--both of American breeding (Bill
Pannill 'Intrigue' and Grant Mitsch 'Quail'). I would pass on Accent--It
was
a great pink-cupped daffodil when it was introduced in 1960, but put it
next
to Fragrant Rose and it will not look as good.
