From a writer in El Paso, Texas and from another list:
But our city fathers were bright enough to do several things that are smart:
1. We bought a couple of large farms at Fort Stockton about 200 miles away
because they have a lot of good underground water.
2. We are going in with the Federal Govt at Fort Bliss on a desalination
plant. Seems like we still have a lot of brackish underground water.
3. We are recycling water to use on the public parks. It is transported in
purple pipes so that you cannot get confused.
4. There is a plant in Northeast El Paso where sewerage is cleaned up and
injected into the ground water.
5. The Water Board will pay up to $100.00 for each old commode which is
replaced with the new 2.3 gallon flush. Water consuming turf which is
replaced with stone can bring a $1.00 per square foot subsidy. To replace an
evaporative air cooler with refrigeration can bring a reimbursement of
$300.00. [An option not likely to be popular because of the high cost of
electricity here]
So I hope you all feel lucky with your big rainfalls and deep snows. <grin>
The wide and varied climates of the US!! Just now we have no mailboxes as
the snowbanks have engulfed them. Hence no mail until personally picked up
for a a while. And this fellow can get 1.00 per square foot for replacing
his lawn. The purple pipes are clever but the lawn thing is inspirational.
