I appreciate Don's remarks..

I notice that Khlem's Song Sparrow 
now lists Clematis montana as Zone 4.

Song Sparrow has sent me beautiful plants,
large, etc., and I could not imagine that
fine nursery erring on a Zone.

I made inquiry, and they informed me
that it was Zone 5, but would survive in
Zone 4.  Hmm....

Well, now!  After trying two C. montanas here in
Zone 4, and with as many failures, I think I
shall ask you good gardners:

    Would Clematis montana survive Zone
    4 if planted deeper?  you see.....I have
    this huge fallen tree......
