Now, I would like to see the climbing of trees to wrapped them from the cold. I have fought with wind and cold air many times to cover with reemay…row cover. Did cover the special trilliums with it but the hostas just got leaves over them. Sink or swim…but they will come back. Nancy. We can buy it by the metre or on the roll. I make a fleece ball for the crown of my Fern to protect the knuckles below the fur.
I have a peony showing stems, tete - a - tete daffs out. A purple Crocus no idea how that got there. My white and pink Dicentras(Bleeding Hearts) are on the way. Maybe a couple of surprises like the Crocuswill turn up later. Birds drop seeds as they pass by pots or soil, lucky us...😂 On 25 Feb 2017, at 19:53, Kitty Morrissy <1*@rewrite.hort.net> wrote:
Fleece? Is this something you wrap the bushes with? Is it like the white row-cover fabric? I have some of a grade that insulates 10 extra degrees and some that is lighter weight. And Don, yes, when I stooled the lilac last week it was already budding out which is why I was worried. Not worried about the bloom as I know there won’t be any. Just worried about the overall health of the shrub. I just noticed today that my lovely little rockgarden iris are in bloom with the crocuses. Course we're not Orangutans fleecing tall trees so we tend to look for the hardy trees and plants. On 25 Feb 2017, at 19:17, Don Martinson <1*@rewrite.hort.net> wrote:
What I tend to worry about with these warmer than usual days in late winter is that some plants (particularly shrubs and some trees) will begin to bud out, only to be frozen by a cold snap in March and there goes the bloom/fruit for that year. Both of my witch hazels are in full bloom, but I’m not particularly worried about them.

I checked the 2-week forecast and the highs range from 37 to 58° which isn’t bad at all for this time of year here in zone 5b. I’m hoping for it to just continue for a while like that w highs in the 40s, then 50s for a spring during which I can get some work done. Here we have a tendency to be cold, wet, overcast, dreary in the spring and when we finally get a chance to get out and work in the yard it suddenly jumps to 80°. It’s a bear when you have to work for a living and can’t take advantage of good days when we have them. Believe me, I took full advantage of last weekend! Kitty neIN

Just maybe a day but not 6 weeks. Still not done yet. Today plants were wilting in heat. Daffodils were lasting a long time with cool night and cool days but 75 plus is hot.

It is not winter here in Tennessee. Spring Beauties, bloodroot, and the best daffodils I have ever seen. Large blooms, smooth surface, substance...beautiful. Now the cold will come back but I will enjoy the best hellebores and daffodils I ever remember seeing. Nancy -----------------------------------------
