I have to say that my favorite liatris that I've come across is Liatris
microcephala. I forget the common name right now (dwarf western blazing
star?), but it's a shrubby little thing maybe only 12" high. The flower
stalks are thin (like a pencil), although they tend to get long and curly
if there's not enough sun. It's also more on the lavender side than most
other Liatris.
It seems to like a dry, sunny location in zone 5a/5b (both Chicago and
E. Central Illinois).
