A difficult question to answer, as neither are named cultivars. The
Russian sage came from a local nursery and merely carried the genus name.
It is about 3 ft tall, and is in sandy soil with some organic ammendments (
I am on sandy glacial deposits that have spent the last 100 years as
hayfield or front lawn). I guess it should get taller, but it dies back to
ground level every year, and with our dug well I can't give it supplemental
water.
The lavender is one of the "English" lavenders but I dug it up from the
last house and brought it with along, so it has survived at least 7 years
with some winters getting down to -32 C. It originally had a Richters tag,
which makes sense since they are only about 20 minutes from here, but that
got left behind. Again, some years I mulch it a bit with cedar bark, some
years I forget. I killed several plants in addition to this one by planting
them in a spot where they had wet feet in spring, but this one and others
picked up at garden club plant sales have been doing fine in the main bed
which is very free draining. We do get dieback but I just wait until early
may and trim out the dead bits. The plants seem to respond very well to it
and bloom heavily. I grow them next to some pink Austin roses like Hero,
where they look particularly nice.
Bob.
