Re: Birds in the Theme Garden

Grant Mitsch Daffodils
P.O. Box 218
Hubbard, Oregon 97032

Send for a catalogue. Lovely pictures.

has a series of daffodils which have been named for birds: bittern,
bobwhite, flycatcher, grebe, lapwing, lark, limpkin, nighthawk, plover,
shearwater, shrike, teal, thrasher, toucan, warbler, woodthrush and lots
of others. All are beautiful.

'Shrike' is one of the Division 11 papillon cultivars that physically
stops traffic at daffodil shows. It could have been called Shriek, it's
so bright. Warbler is an all-yellow, early cyclamineus daffodil that's
very sweet. I won a number of ribbons last spring with some stems of
Woodthrush. Some of the daffs in this series are named for tropical /
foreign birds.

Another Oregon breeder has a series with fish names and a series with
Native American names. An Irish breeder, Richardson, named a whole
series of daffodils after race horses. Another Irish breeder, Brian
Duncan, has a group of daffodils with African names and ones with
various Irish place names.
