You really hit on a topic that I have been working on right now. I am
extending a bed (less lawn is always the motto!) and am trying to work in
winter interest since it will be seen from the living room windows. The bed
will be about 20' away from the house and will border the street on one
side.
Anyway, I am thinking about a Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' with three Ilex
verticillata 'Sprite' around it and possibly some Osmanthus 'Goshiki's at
the edges. I have not had an opportunity to go to a nursery yet to put them
together. What do all of you think? I will work in lots of perennials
around them (to justify these comments on this list!!). Will be moving
established plants of Sedum 'Autumn Joy', Miscanthus 'Morning Light' and
lots of hardy fuchsias among other things to fill the bed.
