Anne, it sounds lovely! I especially like to imagine the wooden arbors and
trellises. What do you grow on them? As for planning, maybe if we were
really planners, we'd all be "Landscape Architects"....but, instead, we're
people who just love plants.

One book that may interest you is American Border Gardens, by Melanie
Fleischmann (Clarkson Potter, 1993, ISBN # 0-517-57646-5). Lots of plans,
and most include at least some shrubs and sometimes trees.
