They're often grown as an understory tree, but they could probably take
full sun in your area.  They do grow slowly when they're young.  Raintree
Nursery catalog says they "prefer partial shade in hot dry areas."  I don't
think this is your problem.  I'm sure that Morton, WA has a different
climate than yours,but you might talk to the people at Raintree Nursery.
They sell pawpaws, and the catalog sounds as if they grow them themselves.
This is probably not the right time of year to contact them, though.
