Hi Leslie,
See you have had quite a few answers to this one already. Many of the
Digitalis are bi-annual, but there are at least 4 perennial species and
hybrids that do well for me here in southern Indiana. Also these are sold
as perennials. Try the hybrid X mertonensis (tall ,blooms the color of
crushed strawberries), D. ambigua ( a yellow), lanata (white-brown) and
lutea (another short yellow).
They will seed about best when they have a gravely surface to fall into or
a coarse mulch. I use a chopped leaf mulch and get few seedlings, but then
I also save almost all of my seeds before they can fall.
Seeds germinate in warm temps. If they fall to the ground in late fall
when the soil temperatures are already down they will just wait until the
following spring. Bring the seed into a green house with warmth and they
will germinate right off.
