I've found that it does well in a dry area when the roots are shaded
(after all, it is native to our tallgrass prairies). It's true that
the plant is usually found in seeps and fens, but I have seen it in
dry prairies as well. In the latter case it is usually protected by
tall grasses.

I have mine in a shady spot alongside my driveway. Dry shade with very
little water... It is paired with peonies, which hide the Filipendula
foliage (tend to get crispy in August, but it survives).
