RE: Hinkley's new book and catalogue

Sophie,  If you read some of the front pages of the Heronswood catalog you will see that it is the first book of a trilogy.  With books on trees & shrubs/vines to follow in a few years.  As in all things Mr Hinkley does, his concern is with the choice, rare and unusual.  Especially finds from his yearly plant hunting expedition in the far east.  I received this book for Christmas and have enjoyed every page.  I wouldn't necessarily call it a book to use for "regular" perennial gardening, but more for very special perennial gardening.  It all depends on what kind of a book you are looking for.

Subject: Hinkley's new book and catalogue

I got today Hinkley's catalogue - what fun to read, although it makes me  very jealous of all you lucky guys in the zone 7 and higher. His last book, ' The Explorer's Garden' is waiting in my shopping cart at the Amazon for your advice: how relevant is it for the gardeners in the harsher climes (zone 5 in my case)? After years of buying and reading wonderful garden books by English writers I am getting tired of reading about landscaping with fuchsias and such. Thanks for your input Sophie
