Hi,

I just sent along a post which listed a lot of the plants we did last year.
We did mail order (Bluestone, Burpee, Park, Wayside G, T&M) and Bob started
a lot from seed (much of which was quite successful). He had set up a
section of a room to start things under lights inside, and built a cold
frame, had truckfuls of loam, decorative stone, and sand delivered,
etc......we went into this BIG TIME ;<)))))))

I should point out that this house was built 18 years ago and the
landscaping we planned at the time has matured, some has even been replaced
due to overgrowth. It is a long low Cape style home and out front we
planted many creeping junipers which have grown into a lush mat. No lawn!
Add to this slopes up to the street which are planted in many more
evergreen shrubs, and along the front of the house many more evergreens of
varying sizes and types. Some birch trees, and a lot of white pine, plus
oaks and maples.....a rustic setting and a wonderful setting to work with
in many ways. We wanted to add color and interest. Thus the interest in
beginning a perennial garden(s)....sort of trying for an English cottage
garden effect here in New England.

Birdscaping will be mostly accomplished with the shrubs, but we decided to
add more coneflowers and monarda, which attracted a lot of butterflies and
birds last year. We had bought a lot of perennial books, but also got
several on birdscaping, and will be trying out some of their ideas for
plants in the upcoming garden season. I don't have handy the list of
plants we ordered for that purpose, but will look it up later. We are now
adding borders to the back yard (a long story to get into, too long for
now) and will be concentrating on colors to attract birds there, since most
of our feeders are out there (lots of woods behind the back yard for
cover). I do know we are trying the white coneflowers out there.

Well, enough for now. I will explain the backyard situation later. Thanks
for encouraging us to participate. I have to say that some of our greatest
moments last year were going outside and finding a bud or a flower and
anticipating more! After years of not having time for this hobby which Bob
enjoys, now that we are retired I know we will be much more involved with
it. We have LOTS of space to work with, so heaven knows where this will
end up!
