Re: Drought tolerant perennials

Mary,

I agree with you about the benefits of an overhang on the house. I have a
slight one in the corner of one house; a very protected area. It gets no
snow, no harsh winds, morning sun, and very little winter moisture. One
year I grew foxgloves from seed and they overwintered in that area and
never stopped growing -- they were huge plants the size of cabbages. Very
unusual being that I'm in zone 6a! Come early spring, I transplanted them
out into the regular borders and they literally stopped traffic with those
4 - 5 foot spikes of bloom intermingling with my old-fashioned roses. I
had a lot of people lean over the fence to ask what they were, how to grow
them, etc. Since that year, that protected corner has hostas, but I'm
seriously thinking about pulling some up to make room again for foxglove or
delphinium seedlings.
