Bright colors for woodwork

Nan wrote in part:

through a "strictly plants" phase of gardening and then realize that it
takes more than simply plants to create a beautiful environment, so they
start looking at the overall environment, including woodwork."...

I second Susan in saying "Well said!" When I started, all I could think
of was plants, and chiefly perennials. Over time, I learned the value
of adding woody plants, bulbs, annuals, and then considering the
surrounding elements of buildings, fences, accessories, etc. (Working
in exactly the opposite order of all the design book 'rules,' of
course!)

I have a wonderful book which I have lent or mislaid, but it features a
dozen or two gardens in England, some of which are pocket-sized front
gardens that have stunning painted elements - front doors, fences - in
blue or yellow or red that serve to tie the house and garden together in
ways that a "plants only" approach could never achieve. When I find it
I'll pass on the title & author.
