RE: Pronounciation book

Joanie,
Don't fret about pronouncing botanical names. Some are SUCH tongue
twisters! I said Cotton-Easter for a long time before I figured out what
ko-tawnee-aster was! (Bet everybody on this list did at one time or
another).
I have never heard Helleborus pronounced as Hell-EBB-or-us. Here where I
live its HELL-a-bor-us. But, the thing that has become more obvious to me
as I connect with gardeners from around the US and Britain is - it depends
on where you live how things are pronounced. I found the same to be true
when pronouncing medical Latin terms/names.
When I was taking plant ID classes, the instructor never insisted the
students pronounce botanical names the same way that she did. Her theory
was that Latin is a "dead" language and no one living actually knows how it
should be pronounced, we are all just guessing! So....your guess is as good
as mine :).

Speaking of pronounciations, how does everyone say Helleborus? Until
recently, I thought it was hell-a-bor'-is...now I find it's hell-eb'-orus.
True?

Joanie (who, as a fledgling gardener, said cotton easter instead of
ca-ton'-ee-aster)
