Joanie:
May I make the case for adding some bulbs to this bed?
Planted til the perimeter, they should receive adequate sun and the
foliage will be covered as other things come along.
Daffodils: Ice Follies- very early season, starts cream turns white, 14"
Jenny- smaller, very white and butterfly-like, 10"
White Plume- mid-season, good increaser, grey-green eye, 16"
Intrigue - late mid-season, opens pale yellow turns white, 12-14",
fragrant
Papillon Blanc- white w/star shaped green and yellow flat cup that
turns white 18"
late mid-season
Green Pearl- pure white, grass green eye, fragrance, late, 14"
Sinopel- white, lime green eye, fragrant, very late, 14"
Crocus any white one!
Hyacinthoides Hispanica White Triumph, has been a good increaser here,
late spring
Tulips Greenland- a viridiflora, planted here in clay, has done great
Galanthus nivalis, (snowdrops) 6"
Leucojum (snowflakes) white with green tips
Colchicum autumnale 'Album', 8", and blooms in the fall !
Except for the colchicum, all of these are inexpensive and can be bought
in quantities without breaking the bank. Now if you'd like some more
expensive white daffodil suggestions, I can supply a list and suppliers!

P.S. Not a bulb, but don't forget astilbe.
