Award Winning Daffodils

Marilyn:

Yes, the miniature daffodils do avoid being face down in the mud.
Besides Tete-a-tete and Minnow, and in order to stretch the spring
season, look for bulbs of: Hawera, Little Gem, Chit Chat, Baby Moon and
Sun Disc.
They are all readily available from the Dutch and are easy growers.

But there are some standard sized ones that the American Daffodil Society
suggests as good garden daffs. They award them the Wister Award and
those so far designated are:

Stratosphere yellow and orange, multi-headed, 22" tall, fragrant,
midseason
Accent white and pink, 16" tall, midseason
Ice Follies opens cream turns white, early, large flowers, 16" tall
Sweetness all yellow, prolific, fragrant, 14" tall, midseason
Ceylon yellow and orange, 14" tall, early mid-season
Salome white and salmon pink, 16" tall, late mid-season
Peeping Tom all yellow, 12" tall, early mid-season, swept back petals
Rapture all yellow, 14" tall, early mid-season, swept back petals
(spectacular)
Intrigue opens cream, turns white, multi-headed, late midseason
Tripartite all yellow, multi-headed, 16" tall, late mid-season
Golden Aura all yellow, 14" tall, mid-season

The criteria for a Wister Award are:
1. Must be a good grower, have a floriferous habit
2. Must be long lasting, have clean color, showy at a distance and
reasonably sunfast.
3. Foliage should be vigorous, resistant to disease and frost damage.
4. Flower stem should be taller than foliage, strong and sturdy.
5. Bulb should be resistant to basal rot.
6. Emphasis is on garden performance and readily available.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

<< Daffs are
another story, they just keep going. I have some clumps that are 20+
years
old. I much prefer the smaller Daffs like Tete a tete and Minnow. They
don't flop face down in the mud during spring rains like the tall ones
do.
Although there is nothing more cheerful than a vase of the tall Daffs on
the
kitchen table. Well, it won't be too much longer until the bulbs start
blooming , maybe another month.>>
