Re: Hellebores, Hepatica and UK nurseries was: Anemone sylvestris (and Helleborus foetidus)

Louise,

Actually, Hellebores make very extensive root systems, so even if
your plant isn't all that large, best to dig deep:-)

Those Hepatica pix on Paul Christians site are to die for, aren't
they? I have only one that I got from a trip to Barry Yinger's
Asiatica the year before last. Mine was labeled
'japonica'...flowered last spring - lovely but small as the plant is
a tiny one. Paul says 1.5 cm (about half an inch) and that's what
mine were. Plant height maybe 4 inches (10 cm) max or less. Think
you'd have to have scads of them to make a real impression in the
garden, but they are worth looking at closely. I just keep hoping
mine survives:-)

Listen, if I could buy plants from UK nurseries, I sure would! But,
it's not it the cards, I fear, tho' I did find out that if you go in
person and buy and wash all the soil off the roots, you can bring in
a dozen ( I think it is) plants without too much red tape. Of
course, ya' gotta get there first:-) I have searched for years for
some plants I saw in the UK many years ago and can't find them this
side of the pond.....plus, the list that Crug Farm has makes me
salivate. If you ever go traveling to Wales, you should make a point
of visiting that nursery.

RHS server could just be down as I haven't had any problems getting
to the site.
