RE: Hardy geraniums

Hi Paul,
In my garden G. Wargrave Pink has been a rampant thug. It reseeds
prolifically and will over-grow the shorter G. sanguineum & its hybrids. It
really benefits from being cut to the ground after the spring bloom to tidy
it up and force new foliage and flowers. Otherwise it opens up in the middle
and then flattens out (ugly!). I love G. sanguineum striatum, but wouldn't
dare plant it together with Wargrave Pink.
One that I have been unable to keep going is G. wallichianum 'Buxton's
Blue'. It is such a beautiful blue with a nice white eye. For some reason
it doesn't make it through the winter in my garden. I grow 29 varieties of
hardy Geraniums that seem perfectly happy, but not that one :(. I also like
the large Geraniums, especially G. x 'Magnificum' and G. psilostemon. On
the other end of the size scale, G. cinereum ssp. subcaulescens 'Guiseppe'
is a dainty screaming magenta with a black eye. Too cute in the rockery :).

It's a very nice geranium-for the best plants give it a moist site and a
little shade.
It will grow large and flower well.

I like the large geraniums, but they do take up some space.

Last year I had a customer who bought 200 Geranium sanguineum striatum and
200 Geranium endressei 'Wargrave Pink ' to plant over his Daffodil
collecting.

In a year or two that is going to be a nice plot to look at.

He wanted something that was not too tall and that he could mow over once in
a while.

A number of the Geraniums make good ground covers.
