RE: perennials DIGEST V3 #254

>>Please don't think I am whining <G> but this year my pelargoniums
(scented geraniums) froze for the first time. Normally they are
evergreen here in south Texas but we had 16 degrees on January 3 and
everything froze.

>>I was wondering if anyone has any idea if they will come back in the
spring or if they are actually goners. Each plant had covered a very
large area and were ground covers for me so they will be sorely missed
if dead. :-(

"Perennial" is such a relative term!! However--I had a tropical hibiscus
that froze last year, in my (mostly unheated) basement, under lights. I
thought it was gone and didn't even bring it out of the basement with the
rest of the plants, and turned the lights off. No water from February on.
Imagine my shock when I found it in August, fully leafed out, with each leaf
paper-white!! I gradually eased it into the light and it went through all
the shades of green to get to where it would have been in a normal year.
Didn't bloom, though.
