Somehow my weather is warmer than Chris and Don--- and I am in the middle :)
Today's tour showed the usual signs of spring plants. But noticeable
differences this year in my yard:
The hollyhocks, the achillea, buddleia, sedum, noticed some trees appear to
be alive, and a host of other spring plants have already peaked there heads
out. The pond plants are growing, and the fish are active. Summer birds are
the only ones smart enough not to be here yet. Not good in my opinion.
Should be an interesting spring and summer here. Um- wondering if I should
uncover the roses or not???
Today it was 65 degrees easy- out there in my t-shirt, working up a sweat
cleaning up some things around the pond and yard. Bad news, forecast for
shovelable snow and temp of 16 for the high by Wednesday.. Hum.
Did anyone notice the articles in the Chicago Sun Times today? I quote-
S-11--
Ohio State University research on salt effects on plants-- this time on
flowers instead of woody plants. Perennials found to be especially resistant
to rock salt included:
Sedum "Autumn Joy", Heuchera "Palace Purple", creeping lilyturf "liriope
muscari". Dianthis "Helen", Hosta "Mersio-Variegata", America "Splendens".
sea lavendar, two varieties of Artemisia "Silver Mound and Powis Castle",
and two varieties of daylily " Cherry Cheeks and Stella d"Oro".
Ornamental grasses also fared well:
"Karl Foerster" feathered reed grass, "Elijah Ble" fescue, blue lyme grass
and perennial fountain grass all preformed well after being repeatedly
doused with salty water.
Interesting - any comments?
Although this post is really quite lengthy already- they also had an article
on plant magazines :)
There top three picks:
