Hi Donna,
I've been doing that for a while now. I personally have an artificial
tree, but I walk around the block and grab a couple of the trees
sitting by the curb. After fifteen minutes with a Felco I have a
pile of branches that works great to protect my plants.
The branches usually hold their leaves very well, but the biggest
problem is getting rid of them in the spring. My parents have a
small chipper/shredder that they use on theirs, but I usually shake
off the needles into the compost pile and put out the remaining
branches with the yard waste.
Now, as to whether or not it helps, I can't tell you. But I've never
lost anything that I covered, either. :)
