BBC America did an interview on Alan T. appearing today. It was on their
interview show with the moderator named Parkinson.
Since they tend to repeat shows, I am sure it will come up again. It may
have been broadcast earlier as well. The subject was Ground Force but the
interview was free ranging.
Best line from Mr. T. was that he begun work in a greenhouse at fifteen or
sixteen and was 4 feet 10 inches tall. He worked there three years and grew
to five feet nine inches. Said if you have a child to lengthen up, put him
under glass.
He left school at fifteen having no abilities with "French and maths," went
to a city park, then this greenhouse if I have it order. He went on to a
diploma at Kew and all the other things well known. It occurs to me that a
person who has such a determination to be a gardener who leaves school at
fifteen in the US will not have much opportunity.
He is such a nice man. Exudes friendliness, has what a friend calls genuine
goodness. There is one more season of Ground Force which we have not seen in
the US and that is it.
On the Nelson Mandela garden, he explained why they chose Mandela. Mandela
had gardened while in prison for 27 years stating it had sustained him
through those years so he was chosen for the program. Good interview.
