Claire you have mentioned two people i greatly admire, AT has released a new
book which he calls memoirs rather than an autobiography called 'Trowel and
error' and having finished reading it (xmas present) pass on that I
thoroughly enjoyed it, it talks about his time on a 'chat show' which i
didn't believe to be his medium at all, so when he took over 'gardeners
world' had reservations, but he excels in the garden environment and is able
to relay his enthusiasm and love of the hobby we are all passionate about
that I will be really sorry to see him go.
You also mentioned Dr Jack Elliott who I have been privileged to meet on many
occasions, vastly knowledeable man who when showing you round his garden has
the ability to make you feel completely at ease, informing and sharing
information in such a way, as if on level terms. His garden was a delight, he
had a bank of cyclamen with corms tha size of dinner plates, wonderful
display. He was a prime mover in starting the Kent Group of the Hardy Plant
Society and I attended several lectures of his, immensly enjoyable with wry
touches of humour. He is a retired Doctor (medicine) with his wife sold their
house to move to a more manageable garden and then suffered a stroke (i
believe) and is now in a hospice, very sad.
It relates to Gene's view of 'teachers all round you,' both the above have
had an influence on me in different ways.
Anyway Claire both authors highly recommended and enjoyable reading.
