Copper is very toxic to plant roots and one can buy copper paint and paint
landscaping fabric. When the roots hit the painted fabric with the copper
the ends die.
In the tree business many pots are painted with a copper compound that makes
the root systems branch out more.
Even container grown perennials are some times planted in copper treated pots
to give a more balanced root system.
