Yes, you areright- if you confine your plant in a small area it will limit
its growth.
You would want to put the copperon the out side of the bag its its going into
the ground to keep the tree roots out- the plant on the inside of the bag
can be allowed to grow thruw the bag into the surrounding soil sometimes
beacuse the roots are able topush on the bag and make small holes befor they
come in contact with the copper.
But the size of your bag is what counts. Hosta have shallow roots that
liketo spread out along the surface of the soil- so one could put the copper
treaded fabric 8 inches deep ands the Hosta wouldbe happy.
A great way to grow plants in the field for potting up or selling bare root
is to grow them in a raised bed that is 6 inches deep with land scape
fabric to keep the roots from growing down into the soil. It makes it much
easer to dig the plants and you get most of the root system.
