Hollyhocks

Hi Everyone:

Well, I just love hollyhocks ever since I was a child and my Mother grew
them by the yard full. Now, I still love these plants but the Japanese
beetles do too. So I stopped growing these plants for years now. But, this
year I'm going to try once again. Any one have ideas about the beetles?
Anyone else out there in garden land have any ideas about these pests. It
seems the beetles love hollyhocks and my ferns. So I usually cut the ferns
down in the summer when the beetles arrive. Is there anything I could dust
the hollyhocks with that would at least leave the flowers in tact from these
greedy little suckers? I live here in Pennsylvania zone 6, but have lots of
fields surrounding our home - so putting that stuff on the lawn for grubs
actually wouldn't do that much good. One year I was beside myself just
trying to pick off these critters.
So just gave up on them. I can't believe these things can't be removed from
society?
Guess the chemical companies make too much money on those garden hanging bag
traps.

Perhaps when my Mom grew these plants these beetles weren't in the US.
Looking at the 40 and 50's. And we did live in the City.
