Now, I havn't read the full thread, but can I assume I
could make a barrier around a sidewalk tree and this
would contain the root system. ie 4'x4'
If this is true, then some neighborhoods don't need to
pull the trees out once they destory the sidewalks.

In the tree business many pots are painted with a
copper compound that makes
the root systems branch out more.
Even container grown perennials are some times planted
in copper treated pots
to give a more balanced root system.
