Dear Paul,

I perceive that you typed this timely message after long and thoughtful
examination of the subject. T'was a great laugh this AM looking at an icicle
out my office window about 10 inches wide and heading for the ground. We
have to remove them this year for many reasons such as ruining the gutter
system. This is first time in quite a few years.

If you leave for a warmer place, many do, you still have to return. Getting
off a plane from a warm place into a car covered with ice and snow on the
long term lot is awful. Maybe worse than staying here.

I think I understand the 500 watt light issue. We have a strip of moveable
halogens clean across the kitchen/ family/dining room combination.
Originally it was put up to help aging eyes work in this area more easily.
It is the most popular place in the house because it is the brightest. This
makes a difference in the North which you find after you have experienced it,
add more light, happier outlook. Not a little more, a lot more.

Noone in our house is very fond of the cold, we are of the same opinion as
you. Even the cat has rebelled this year and has not been out the door for
quite a while. Cats are funny creatures. Ours seems to think that if it is
cold and nasty at one door, a few minutes later she might try another door
where she may find some sun and a snow-free place to walk. So we open and
shut the doors until she is satisfied the weather is awful everywhere.

We can console ourselves with the knowledge that the warmer areas of the
country will reach around 100 degrees F. next summer and we will be cooler
and be able to be outdoors. Not being able to be outdoors has a very
confining effect on gardeners, maybe everybody. I have, this morning, no
cheering thought regarding cold. I, too, hate the cold.
