I bet the ficifolia will do 12 feet for you in your climate. If they are in
the shade they reach for the sun producing yellow branched hollyhocks peering
out of lilacs and bush honeysuckles.
I should also have mentioned Alcea rugosa. This is another species nearly
rust free. Garden North, a superior seed house in that Ms. Walek lists seeds
unavailable generally, has Alcea kurdica this year. I don't know that one
but it seems worth a try.
This seed is very easy to germinate, you would be sure of many plants. The
Gardens North catalog is a zone 4 specialist though not confined to zone 4
gardens. This catalog includes germination information with each listing.
If the seed you want is more difficult than you care to deal with, you will
know in advance. Gardens North is online.
