That is so interesting that you try these once in while. It is true that
putting it into the border as per usual recommendation will not succeed but
this method of sharp drainage, low winter moisture seems to transform some
plants in ways we are not trained to understand.
Last week I pruned a Streptocarpella down to a few inches because it was too
large for GH space. The cuttings were left on the floor because I had other
plants to do. The cuttings from the trimming are still there, still green
and turgid and could be rooted if I did not already have too many of them.
This is a tender plant preserved by the cold floor and good air circulation.
It has hairy soft leaves and would collapse immediately in warmth. You learn
from accidents as this one.
Some of the stuff in the gravel and crevice areas will live for reasons not
completely understood by me. That being said and understanding that nearly
no gardener builds crevices for plants it is maybe just an idea for true
plant nuts.
