daffodils

Hi Claire:

If the color is a muddy white, not clear and bright (what the breeders
now call 'toned' !!! ), and if the cup could be described as tiny and
pale yellow, I'd suggest that it might be 'Twin Sisters'. Here, it
usually has two flower heads to a stem - hence the name. It's very
fragrant and may be the last daff to bloom in my garden.

'Twin Sisters' is found at a lot of old farms and in ditches in this part
of the country and in the south. I don't know about New York State
though.

Bill Lee wrote: " The jonquils and poets are typically what are found at
old homesteads--they're very tough." I think I'll take issue with part
of that. Yes, jonquils and poets are tough but at really old places, in
my experience, one is more likely to find mop-headed doubles like 'Butter
and Eggs' or 'Van Sion' (with lots of green on the back).
