I will pass this along to the friend who invited me. She is on some
committee that selected Ms. Cunningham. If it happens it won't be the first
time. Ruth Clausen left the lectern last year because she said she was
allergic to something in the auditorium. Her topic was integrating tropical
into a northern summer garden. An author who did a book cottage gardening
ended her talk in the middle of a sentence when a stop watch went off. Paid
time was up. Then there was a central Mass. author, a very likable lady, who
invited the whole room up to her garden last summer. The day came, it was in
the ninety degree range and there was no garden.
Ms. Hobhouse did the circuit last year also and she arrived with a huge truck
full of books. Millions of books, lined the high school halls for miles. She
was very polite, she apologized over and over for not being familiar with our
zone and plants and was very difficult to understand. When the thank yous
and handshaking was to take place she was at the end of an enormous line of
purchasers wanting a signature.
I think these things are attended because of cabin fever in our area. Ken
Druse is in Berkshire Botanic this Saturday coming. They will not allow
pickup at the door for tickets and people do not want to pay up front as here
all fear snow covered roads making travel in the hills impossible. If these
gatherings are held on a balmy day in May, nobody would turn up. We get to
have a friendly lunch out though.
